Science homework: 6th February 2014

Make a list of things that you have in your house that are designed to keep things cold or keep things hot. What materials are they made from? Are they thermal conductors or insulators?

  1. Around my house I have:

    * A radiator: They are made out of plastic carbon or high carbon steel. They are filled with water. It is a thermal conductor.

    * A fridge: They are made out of steel. But the outer might not be steel. It is a thermal insulator.

    * A freezer: They are made out of steel. But the outer might not be steel. It is a thermal insulator.

  2. A radiator is made out of steel and it keeps you warm, so it is a conductor.
    A fridge is made out of aluminum and it keeps things cold, so it is conductor.
    A toaster is made out of steel and it toasts bread, so it is a conductor.

    1. What is the inside of a fridge made out of Kamile? Is that a conductor or an insulator?

  3. Thermos is made of plastic and metal \Insulator.
    Radiator is made is of metal \Thermal conductor.
    Iron is made of plastic and metal\Insulator.
    Fridge Is made of plastic \Insulator .
    Saucepan is made of metal \Conductors.
    Clothes are made of anything \Insulator.

  4. Duvets keep you warm.
    Refrigerator keeps you cold.
    Central Heating keeps you warm.
    Microwave warms up food.
    Oven warms up food.
    A kettle boils water.
    Duvet is made out of cotton and synthetic fiber.
    Metal is a good conductor but wood is a bad conductor.Plastic is a good conductor I think.
    I know wood is a bad conductor because in cafe's or restaurants you may see hot food placed upon a block of wood so that the heat does not burn or damage the table in any way.
    My apologies for the shortness of the comment but I tried my best.
    Best wishes

  5. Radiator=metal, thermal conductor
    Clothes=wool, thermal insulator
    Fridge=plastic, thermal insulator
    Hot water bottle=rubber, thermal insulator
    Wall=bricks and cement, thermal insulator
    Saucepan=metal, thermal conductor

  6. I have the following in my house:
    Underground heating-Keeps you warm-Thermal conductor-Metal
    Fridge-Keeps things cold-Thermal insulator-Plastic
    Oven-Heats things up food-Thermal conductor-Metal
    Freezer-Freezes things-Thermal insulator-Steel
    Walls-Keeps heat in-Thermal insulator-Insulation
    Roof-Keeps heat in-Thermal insulator-Insulation
    Saucepan-Heats up things on the cooker-Thermal conductor-Metal
    Duvet-Keeps you warm when sleeping-Thermal insulator-Cotton and synthetic fibres
